The Mid-State South Carolina Chapter of the National Alzheimer's Association serves 25 South Carolina Counties: Aiken, Allendale, Barnwell, Bamberg, Calhoun, Chester, Chesterfield, Clarendon, Darlington, Dillon, Edgefield, Fairfield, Florence, Kershaw, Lancaster, Lee, Lexington, Marion, Marlboro, Newberry, Orangeburg, Richland, Saluda, Sumter, and York. The office is located at 120 Kaminer Way Parkway, Suite G in Columbia.
In November of 1981, a group of concerned persons met at Virginia Wingard Memorial United Methodist Church to explore the possibility of forming a support group for the families of individuals with Alzheimer's disease. Mrs. Madge Merritt and Dr. Dolores Macey were central to the formation of this initial group.
As the group continued to grow, a formal organization was formed and the board of directors decided to affilate with the National Alzheimer's Association. In late 1983, the Association was granted chapter status.
The past 20 years have been a period of tremendous growth for the Chapter. The Alzheimer's Association, Mid-State South Carolina Chapter now employs 4 full-time employees, maintains 30 caregiver support groups, provides in-service training, workshops, and holds an annual educational symposium attended by nearly 300 professionals and caregivers each year.
